The third ever College Football Playoff gets underway this afternoon/tonight in Atlanta and Glendale, Arizona. And, we at F.F.I. will be watching eagerly like everyone else, especially with Tampa hosting the winners January 9th in the CFP Title Game at Raymond James Stadium.
There is no bigger love/hate iconic team in college football right now than Alabama. With an amazing four championships over the last seven years, including their title win over Clemson a year ago, Bama is THE brand name right now in college football.
This afternoon, they will host the Pac-12 champion Washington Huskies, in the Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Tide behind explosive freshman QB Jalen Hurts and a monstrous defense again this year are 14 point favorites today to head to Tampa next weekend to defend their title.
By the way, taking into account regular season games, SEC Title games, etc., coach Nick Saban at Bama is 8-1 at the Georgia Dome. Good luck Washington.
In the other semi-final playoff game, last year’s runner-up Clemson is back in the CFP to play Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. The Tigers are led by All American and Heisman Finalist QB Deshaun Watson and a potent offense. Meanwhile the Buckeyes didn’t even win their division, much less the Big Ten title, yet the CFP committee voted them into the Top 4 based on their quality wins over Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Michigan. All three of those teams are in the “New Year’s Six” bowl games.
Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer is no stranger to winning it all, as he won national titles at Florida and two years ago with the Buckeyes over Oregon in the inaugural CFP. Ohio State is led by QB J.T. Barrett and an outstanding run game with Curtis Samuel coming on strong late in the year like Ezekiel Ellliott (heard of him?) did in this opportunity two years ago.
It will be dramatic stuff and to victors will go semi-final wins, and a trip to the fun-sun of Tampa Bay to play for the whole thing.
Our New Year’s Eve recaps are coming later tonight.
