The New Orleans Saints came into the 2017 NFL in dire need to restock their defense. They did just that drafting five defensive players. They took Marshon Lattimore from Ohio State 11th overall. They selected Utah S Marcus Williams 42nd overall in the second round and Florida LB Alex Anzalone with the 76th pick in the third round. Then a little later in the third round, they took FAU DE Trey Hendrickson with the 103rd overall pick.

Today we will focus on Hendrickson who at 6’4 266, was a player who impressed scouts with his workouts and interviews. He was one of the best defensive players in Conference USA for the past four years, being named to all conference first team in back to back years. Not only was he a fierce defender, he also was one of the best special teams players in the nation tied for the FBS lead in blocked kicks with 4. The Saints drafted a well decorated player.

Now the question will be what kind of impact Hendrickson will make for the Saints in his rookie year. The Saints were in dire need to solidify the defensive backfield but also their pass rush. What this means, that because of their lack of depth at pass rusher, Hendrickson is going to be in the rotation. Right now he has a shot to start opposite of Cameron Jordan. The likelihood he’s an every down player his rookie season at this point is probably low. With that said, his skill set and football IQ can help his cause during actual game play. He has work to do that’s for sure, but who doesn’t. His work ethic is without question extremely high. As long as he studies film and works hard, he will be important for the Saints in 2017 on defense.

Where Hendrickson can make an immediate impact will be on special teams. He’s a complete ball hawk when it comes to punts, kicks and extra points. It will come as no surprise if he blocks at least one kick in his rookie season. You can’t teach this specialize instinct and he comes packed with a full clip in this category. The Saints got a tremendous value with Hendricks, and if he keeps on working on his craft and stays healthy, he could be collecting checks in this league for quite some time.
