The NFL Draft is a weird animal when it comes to projecting where players will land in the draft. The NFL scouting system is so complex and dynamic that seems to have as many parts as the retired NASA space shuttles. The most scrutinize position is generally the QB position, because the value of that one player and impact that player has on a franchise is tremendous. Basically if you have yourself a franchise QB, you have yourself a contender. The 2017 NFL Draft is filled with several QB prospects hoping to perhaps become an NFL franchise player. One of those is former Miami Hurricane QB Brad Kaaya.

Does Kaaya have a chance to sneak into the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft? Well, anything is possible. Right now he’s listed on most boards as the #5 QB in the draft, and a 3rd round pick. That said with the combine only two weeks away, things can change.

The one thing that hurts Kaaya is that he’s probably the least mobile out of the top 5 QBs. When Miami’s offensive line were playing the role of amusement park turn styles, Kaaya struggled and the team lost four straight. However the coaching staff made some adjustments and it paid off immensely for Kaaya, who ended the season on a five game win streak, capped off with their first bowl win in a decade. Perhaps his lack of mobility will be a red flag, however his ability to bounce back after a four game skid and just roast opponents is also a great sign.

Some of the throws Kaaya made this year will make scouts excited. He’s able to find seems with precision and catch receivers in stride. He is going to have to put on some weight at 6’4 210. That said considering the beating he took in that four game skid, he’s clearly pretty durable and tough.

If a team is going to take him the first round, it will likely be at the back end of the draft. The New York Giants select at #23 and they do need someone to step in once Eli Manning Retires. However it’s likely the Giants use that pick on an immediate need. The Houston Texans have the 25th overall pick and we know they have a huge hole at QB. Do they pick Kaaya up if they lose out on Tony Romo? The Pittsburgh Steelers have the #30 pick, and with Big Ben hinting at retirement in the near future, they need someone to step up. Could this be Kaaya?

As it looks right now, it’s likely Kaaya won’t sneak into the first round, but you never know. He could go in the second round, which would certainly be a step up from where he is currently projected. We will have a better idea after the combine.
