TAMPA –  Benjamin Franklin once said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston appears to agree with him.

Winston caused a bit of alarm when he took the field for Day 2 of Bucs training camp on Saturday wearing a brace on his left knee but the move, according to Bucs coach Dirk Koetter,  is totally precautionary.

“He’s just demo-ing it out to see how it goes,’’ Koetter said. “He doesn’t have any injury. It’s all preventative, precautionary. We’ll see how it goes.’’

Winston diod not speak to reporters on Saturday, but Koetter said and other Bucs officials confirmed that Winston intended to start wearing the brace on Friday was prevented from doing so.

Koetter said the brace Winston initially intended to wear arrived just before the start of Friday’s workout and that it didn’t fit right, and so the Bucs had to get a new shipped in for Saturday.

No matter how you shake it, this is a smart move by Winston. A lot of quarterbacks take this precaution, and in fact, it was only a couple years ago that all Bucs quarterbacks were wearing such braces.

Greg Schiano was the coach then and he mandated that all of his quarterbacks wear a brace on their plant knee, at least during workouts, to reduce the possibility of injury.

That said, the site of Winston wearing such a brace was a bit alarming. He is, after all, the player the Bucs can least afford to lose, so it may become a permanent thing.

Koetter said that it’s yet to be determined if Winston will wear the brace during games. It’s possible he’ll try it out during the preseason but he could still discard it if he feels it limits him in any way.
