Bucs LB Beckwith will miss first five games on non-football injured list

The Buccaneers had a decision to make Saturday afternoon involving an off field offseason injury to linebacker Kendell Beckwith. And although Beckwith has been making progress, he’s obviously not ready to start the year on the 53 man roster.

So, the Bucs decided to put him on the “non-football injury” or NFI list, and that means Beckwith will not be available for the first five games of 2018.

Beckwith suffered a broken ankle as a passenger in a car accident in Baton Rouge, LA, earlier this year. The hope had been that he would be able to participate in part of training camp or the preseason after having surgery. However, coach Dirk Koetter, defensive coordinator Mike Smith and the Bucs training staff must feel that he was not ready and was not going to be ready anytime in the next couple of weeks.

This is because, the Buccaneers have a roster exemption with Jameis Winston being suspended for the first three games for violation of the NFL personal conduct policy.

For example, the Bucs did elect to keep free agent defensive tackle Mitch Unrein, who’s been suffering all August from a concussion, on the 53 man roster. The Bucs are using that roster exemption to play “wait and see” with Unrein’s concussion to resolve.

Beckwith had a solid rookie year after being drafted in the third round out of LSU. He started 11 games in 2017 with 60 tackles and his best game being against the Patriots where he had 14 tackles (12 solo) in the loss. He was definitely a bright spot out of the Bucs 2018 draft class, who the team has high hopes for in the future.

The Buccaneers have strong linebackers in Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander and veteran eserve Adarius Taylor has been filling in for Beckwith.

Taylor will probably now get the stork for the week one game with the Saints.
