Bucs get LB help signing Broncos Shaq Barrett

Florida Football Insiders

Friday, the Bucs continued their trend of doing short-term deal to try to help their team for 2019. That’s when they signed Broncos linebackers-pass rusher Shaq Barrett free agency.

The team made the announcement mid-afternoon about Barrett being brought in on a one-year deal:

Barrett has played his entire career with the Broncos appearing in 61 games with 15 career starts. He does have 14 career sacks, but only three of them came a year ago. This as, Denver endured a second straight awful season and Coach Vance Joseph was fired.

Barrett’s signing will bolster the pass rush that already features veteran Jason Pierre-Paul, who had 11.5 sacks in 2018 and Carl Nassib, who was acquired via waivers just before 2018 began. Tampa Bay released veteran DE Vinny Curry in a salary cap move last month.

In keeping with the short term deal theme, the Buccaneers earlier this week also signed linebacker Deone Bucannon and re-signed another veteran linebacker played briefly for them last season, Kevin Minter. Both of those players played previously in Arizona for fomer Cardinals coach and new Bucs boss, Bruce Arians.

GM Jason Licht and used that strategy, as well, in signing another one year deal for receiver Breshad Perriman of  the Cleveland Browns.

Back to Barrett, he does have postseason experience, as he played beat all three postseason wins for the Broncos winning Super Bowl 50, when they defeated the Carolina Panthers four seasons ago. He will fit in with the newly acquired Bucannon, Minter and also former Bucs second round pick of 2016, Noah Spence, as new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is expected to primarily use a 3-4 defensive with “stand up” linebacker pass rushers.

Barrett was also Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year at Colorado State in his final season 2013. That year he had 79 tackles with 12 sacks, e forced fumbles and an interception that put him on the Broncos draft radar.
