Well, the Bucs revolving door at running back continues to spin and the latest news involves third year back Charles Sims, who was placed on injured reserve in advance of tonight’s game with the Panthers in Charlotte. Sims injured his knee on a hit last week against the Broncos.

As Roy Cummings wrote late last week, the Buccaneers were already going to go mostly with veteran Jacquizz Rodgers as the primary back in this match-up.

This is because Rodgers knows coach Dirk Koetter’s playbook from their days together with the Falcons and because, he’s already shown the ability to hit the hole/make plays. Rodgers is averaging over five yards per carry in the three games he’s been active.

Tampa Bay will use rookie free agent Peyton Barber as the backup and as part of the Sims transaction, elevated fellow rookie free agent Russell Hansbrough to the active roster to be in uniform tonight. Both saw extensive playing time and carries in the preseason for Tampa Bay.

It is the second time in Sims’ career that he’s gone to injured reserve. He began his 2014 rookie year on IR with an ankle injury but returned halfway through that year.

The Bucs hope to welcome Pro Bowl starter Doug Martin back from his hamstring injury after the bye next week.
