A very interesting side nugget has just been revealed by the father of two great NFL quarterbacks. Archie Manning in an interview with the New Orleans Times Picayune revealed that Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase reached out to his son Peyton after Ryan Tannehill went down.

The exchange was over text message that Peyton showed to his dad. Below is what Archie Manning said was in the text:

“Hey 18, [Ryan] Tannehill went down..I think he’s going to miss some time. The first question I’m going to get at the press conference in the morning is if I’m going to try to bring you to Miami. What do you want me to tell them?’”

Then Peyton responded:

“You tell them I could probably come play, but there’s no way I can miss carpool the next two weeks.”

Gase and Peyton Manning have obviously a nice relationship. This was a very subtle way to try to lure Manning out of retirement, and Manning didn’t budge, but reacting in the total Peyton Manning way. Gase and Manning worked together in Denver, where Gase was the offensive coordinator for the Broncos for two seasons.

Last season after Ryan Tannehill went down, Matt Moore took over. Instead of singing Manning, the Dolphins signed T.J. Yates to back up Matt Moore. Moore went 2-1 as a starter helping the Dolphins clinch a playoff birth, but losing in the Wild Card round against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Still this exchange that was just recently revealed was quite charming. Gase trying to leverage his friend out of retirement with a simple text using a press conference as cover. Gase was likely somewhat kidding, but probably figured it was worth a shot to try. It would have been interesting to see if Gase’s ploy actually worked and he caught Manning at the right place and right time.

As for Tannehill he’s expected to be at full strength come training camp which will be important for a club who is really looking to actually move along at least one more round in the playoffs this coming season.
